Unter den segnenden Händen des Christus über dem Eingang betritt man Bischofswerdas Stadtbild prägende Kirche. Das Mosaikbild am Portal wurde 1907 vom Dresdner Kunstprofessor Goller geschaffen.

Im Inneren fällt der Blick sogleich auf das große Wandgemälde über der Kanzel, 1889 vom Leipziger Professor Winterstein gemalt. Es zeigt den in den Himmel aufgefahrenen Christus und die Evangelisten. Ihre Evangelien sind Grundlage der Predigt von der darunterliegenden Kanzel.

Doch der Auferstandene kommt noch tiefer herab. Das Altargemälde, 1889 von Professor Schönherr gestaltet, zeigt Christus mit den Emmausjüngern. Die künstlerische Ausgestaltung erinnert daran, dass der auferstandene Christus auch heute noch durch das Wort der Predigt spricht und im Sakrament des Altars, in Brot und Wein, heilsam gegenwärtig ist.

Die heutige Christuskirche ist das dritte Kirchengebäude, das sich auf der höchsten Stelle der Innenstadt erhebt. Der Legende nach soll unter Bischof Benno von Meißen hier die erste Kirche errichtet worden sein. 1229 wird sie als Marienkirche urkundlich erwähnt.

Nachdem sie 1469 mit der Stadt niedergebrannt war, wurde sie 1497 im gotischen Stil wieder aufgebaut. Nach Einführung der Reformation 1558 verlor sich der Name Marienkirche. In der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts setzte sich aufgrund der Ausgestaltung der Name Christuskirche durch.

Das gotische Kirchengebäude des Mittelalters wurde zwar durch verschiedene Stadtbrände häufig beschädigt, konnte aber immer wieder hergerichtet werden. Erst der Stadtbrand am 12. Mai 1813 ließ die gotischen Gewölbe in sich zusammenbrechen. Auf die noch stehenden Umfassungsmauern wurde unter Leitung des Dresdner Hofbaumeisters Thormeyer das jetzige Gebäude im klassizistischen Stil errichtet und am 30. Oktober 1818 geweiht. Die Farbgebung im Inneren geht auf die Dresdner Architekten Lossow & Kühne zurück. Sie wurde 1990 erneuert. Die Sanierungsarbeiten an Dach und Fassade des Kirchengebäudes erfolgten 1979/80 und 2004/05.

Die heutige Orgel wurde 1879 von der Firma Eule (Bautzen) erbaut und später erweitert. Sie hat 3224 Pfeifen in 46 Registern.

Das Glockengeläut von 1816 besteht aus vier Glocken, gegossen 1816 von Friedrich Gruhl in Kleinwelka. Wie durch ein Wunder überlebten sie den Zweiten Weltkrieg: 1941 noch zum Einschmelzen vorgesehen, kehrten sie 1948 doch unversehrt auf den Turm zurück. Glockenstuhl und Glockenanlage wurden zuletzt 2005 überholt.

Die Gemeinde versammelt sich von Ostern bis Anfang November zum Gottesdienst in der Christuskirche. In der kalten Jahreszeit finden die Gottesdienste in der besser heizbaren Kreuzkirche am Alten Friedhof statt.

Die Christuskirche ist von April bis Oktober vom Montag bis Freitag zu den Büroarbeitszeiten und samstags am Vormittag sowie selbstverständlich zu allen Gottesdiensten geöffnet.
